The Strava integration allows users to automatically sync their cycling and walking activities, reducing the need for manual trip logging and increasing engagement.
☝️This article is primarily for informational purposes. While Managers can enable Strava in the dashboard, initial setup and configuration typically require support from your Customer Success Manager to ensure proper scoping and optimal settings for your organization.
For a broader understanding of how integrations work, see our Integrations Intro article. For detailed user-facing instructions, refer to our User Strava Setup Guide.
What Is Strava?
Strava is a popular activity-tracking platform for biking, running, and other fitness activities. CommuteHub integrates with Strava to automatically synchronize trips tracked using the Strava app, making it easier for users to log their commutes without manual entry.
The integration also supports the wide array of third-party fitness devices and apps that connect to Strava.
Indoor activities like Peloton or Zwift won't sync since they don't have GPS data.
How to Enable Strava
Strava must be enabled at the organization level before users can connect their accounts. Some integrations, including Strava, require additional scoping with your Customer Success Manager before they can be fully configured. We strongly recommend contacting your Customer Success Manager before enabling Strava.
To enable Strava in the dashboard:
- Log into the Management Dashboard
- Click "Settings" in the left sidebar (Admin permissions required)
- Select "Integrations" from the menu
- Locate Strava in the list of available integrations
- Toggle Strava from Disabled to Enabled
- Click "Configure" to customize settings
- Choose availability:
- All users across your organization
- Only specific networks
- Confirm your settings
Once enabled, Strava will appear as an available connected app for your users.
To disable the Strava integration, switch the toggle to Disabled and confirm. Once inactive, the Strava option will no longer be accessible to your users.
What Users Need to Do
After Strava is enabled at the organization level, individual users must connect their own Strava accounts to CommuteHub. This step cannot be completed on behalf of users—it's required for privacy and security.
Users will need to:
- Have an active Strava account
- Have their work address added to their CommuteHub profile
- Navigate to "Connected Apps" in their account settings
- Click "Connect with Strava" and authorize the connection
- Grant permission for CommuteHub to view their activity data
The connection process takes only a few minutes and is straightforward for users.
To disconnect Strava: Users can return to their Connected Apps section and click "Disconnect" next to Strava.

How Trip Syncing Works
Once a user connects their Strava account, CommuteHub automatically syncs eligible activities.
- CommuteHub identifies commute trips by checking if Strava activities start or end near the user's work address
- By default, activities within 500 meters of the work address are classified as commutes
- Users don't need to manually flag activities as commutes in Strava—CommuteHub handles this automatically
What syncs:
- Only activities recorded after the Strava connection is made will sync
- Activities must have GPS data (manual entries in Strava won't transfer)
- Only supported activity types will sync
Configuration & Customization Options
CommuteHub provides default Strava settings that work well for most organizations. However, there are several optional configuration changes available to customize how the integration works.
Default settings:
- Activities are classified as commutes if one endpoint is within 500 meters of the user's work address
- Activity types are mapped as follows:
- Ride → Bike
- E-Bike Ride → Bike
- Run → Walk
- Hike → Walk
- Walk → Walk
- Inline Skate → Walk
